2009 not only saw the Schools 50th Anniversary but the upgrade of the existing asphalt playground to TigerTurf, transforming an old, tired area into a bright, attractive safe synthetic surface with the help of funding from the Governments National School Pride initiative.
The upgrade involved applying a stone screed overlay to the existing asphalt and laying TigerTurf Tournament 1000 surface across the area. In consultation with the School and TigerTurf’s Design team, lines for basketball, netball, 4 square, hopscotch and a running track where inlaid into the surface. Long life, low maintenance and drought proof, TigerTurf provides a real answer to Schools who continually struggle to upkeep suitable, safe surfaces for children to play on.
Principal, Geoff Steven’s says ‘Fortunately I was the Principal at the time of the National School Pride and had heard through a colleague about the great work TigerTurf were doing in Victorian Schools.
The front playground was completely covered in asphalt and many children had received some very nasty cuts and abrasions over the years. Now it is completely covered with Tiger Turf’s synthetic grass. It is not only safer and more child friendly but also much more appealing to the eye. It is a myriad of colours with a blue basketball court, orange running tracks and circuits as well as yellow hopscotch and blue handball courts all surrounded by a softer green synthetic grass.
The children enjoy their recess and lunchtimes, play happily and their overall fitness is improving because they are doing much more physical activity. The teachers are enjoying playground duty as they do not have to tell the children constantly to stop running on the asphalt and therefore the students return to the classroom much happier. The parents are happier because their child is not coming home with cuts and abrasions.’
TigerTurf has been installing synthetic surfaces in schools since 1990.
